WALNUT CREEK / LAFAYETTE AREA, Calif. — November 5, 2026. Commuters near the border of Walnut Creek and Lafayette should expect intermittent weekday closures on Springbrook Road near Sherwood Way as Contra Costa County continues repairs to a failing underground drainage culvert and sinkhole. The County Public Works Department’s official notice schedules the work from October 1 through November 30, 2026, generally 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and subject to weather.
Why is the road being repaired?
The county is replacing damaged drainage structures underneath the roadway, installing reinforced concrete pipes, rebuilding a portion of the drainage network and restoring the pavement. A degraded culvert and related sinkhole risk made the work necessary. The official project page estimates $527,675 in construction costs, funded through emergency relief and local road funds.
What drivers need to know
Through traffic is blocked during posted construction hours between the area east of Sherwood Way and the work zone. The contractor is expected to provide controlled access for fronting properties and emergency vehicles. The county warns that nearby residents could encounter delays of up to 15 minutes. Signs and a local detour map should govern the route, not any guessed shortcut through neighborhood streets.
Approved county documents describe intermittent closures and temporary steel covers over excavations outside work hours. They should not be read as a guarantee that every portion is always open overnight; verify current signs and county updates before leaving. The last published schedule reviewed specifies work through November 30, but unforeseen conditions could change the completion date.
How does this differ from the Moraga sinkhole threat?
The Springbrook Road work is a distinct location and project from the deteriorated private storm drain that closed an entrance to Moraga’s Rheem Shopping Center. Both illustrate why drainage systems can become major road safety problems, but repairs and detours are managed by different parties. Read California58’s Moraga coverage.
